This important pair of Italian carved giltwood mirrors came from the Palazzo Colonna Di Sciarra in Rome. The pair was obtained by the Catholic Church (Qld) in 1928 directly from the Odescalchi family, who resided in the Palazzo at the time. The mirrors remained in the possession of the Catholic Church until recent times.
The Palazzo Colonna Di Sciarra, located in the Via Del Corso, was designed in the late 16th century. Construction was commenced by Flaminio Ponzio in approximately 1590AD, and was finished by Orazio Torriani in 1630. Enlargements and rearrangements were subsequently undertaken. In 1900 the palace was sold for financial reasons. It is presently occupied by Cassa di Risparmio di Roma (Savings Bank of Rome).
The Odescalchi family is an important Roman family with a long lineage and historical connections to the Roman Catholic Church.
